What we believe

"Our purpose, by the power of the Holy Spirit, is to glorify and enjoy God, and to make disciples of Jesus Christ who are obeying His word, loving and serving one another, and compassionately seeking to bring the lost to Christ."
There are many who believe in the gifts and the ministry of the Holy Spirit, but they don’t have a strong emphasis on biblical teaching, nor do they look to the Word to guide their experiences with the Holy Spirit.  There are many who have a strong emphasis on teaching of the Word of God, but they don’t share the view that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are available and valid today.

At the World Agape Mission Church, you will find the teaching of the Word, and an open heart to the work of the Holy Spirit.  It is this balance that makes WAMC a distinct and uniquely blessed movement of God

 Our Faith Statement
Our Faith statement describes what we believe.
In essential beliefs - we have unity.
“There is one body and one Spirit…there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of us all….” (Ephesians 4:4-6)
In non-essential beliefs - we have liberty.
“Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls… So then each of us will give an account of himself to God… So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God.” (Romans 14:1,4,12,22)
In all our beliefs - we show love.
“…If I hold in my mind not only all human knowledge but also the very secrets of God, and if I have the faith that can move mountains - but have no love, I amount to nothing at all.” (1 Corinthians 13:2)

About the Bible
We believe the Bible is the Word of God.  We believe the original manuscripts of both the Old and New Testaments are verbally inspired by God, inerrant and infallible.  We believe the present canon of Scripture, the Bible, containing the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments, is now complete and closed and is our only and final authority for what we are to believe and for the way we are to live.
(2 Timothy 3:16-17, 2 Peter 1:21, Revelation 22:18-19)

About God
We believe in One God who is manifested in three distinct Persons: the Father, His Son (the Lord Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit.  They are equal in Deity, each One possessing all of the divine attributes, but they are different Persons. All three are eternal, unchanging, and worthy of our faith, love and service.
(Matthew 28:19-20, 2 Corinthians 13:14)

About Jesus Christ
We believe Jesus Christ is eternal; He was with the Father “before the world was.” He became a man, born of the virgin Mary, and His humanity did not in any way change His Deity.  We believe He lived a sinless life, died for the sins of the whole world, was raised bodily from the dead, and then ascended bodily into heaven. We believe He is coming again: before the Tribulation to rapture the Church and after the Tribulation to reign as King upon the earth during the Millennium.
(John 17:5, Isaiah 9:6-7, Matthew 1:20-21, Hebrews 4:15, 1 John 3:5, 1 Peter 2:22, 1 Corinthians 15:3-8, 1 John 2:2, Acts 1:9, Hebrews 4:14, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, Matthew 24:29-31, 25:31)

About the Holy Spirit
We believe the Holy Spirit convicts men of their need of Christ before they can be saved.  He regenerates, baptizes all believers into the Body of Christ, and permanently indwells every child of God from the moment he is saved.  We believe the Holy Spirit endows every believer with one or more spiritual gifts.  He is the Author and Interpreter of the Scriptures in that no one can understand the Scriptures without Him.
(John 16:7-11, 3:5, 1 Corinthians 12:13, John 14:16-17, Romans 8:9, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 12:4-11, Romans 12, 1 Peter 4:10, 2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:21, John 16:13, 1 Corinthians 2:10-14,  John 14:26, 16:13)

About Man
We believe man was created by God in the image of God.  We believe man was created without sin, but due to Adam’s disobedience, the whole human race fell under divine judgment.  We believe men are born with a sin nature, totally depraved, alienated from God, and unable to do anything to remedy this situation.
(Genesis 1:26-27, Psalms 14:1-3, Isaiah 53:6, Romans 3:23, 5:12, Ephesians 2:1-3)

About Satan
We believe Adam’s original sin was provoked by Satan.  We believe Satan continues to tempt men to sin. Satan (also called the Devil) is a living being, a fallen angel, who leads the demons (other fallen angels) in opposition to all that has to do with God, His purposes, and His people. Although Satan still does his evil work in the world, he is a defeated and doomed foe who will ultimately be cast into the lake of fire.
(Genesis 3, 2 Corinthians 4:3-4, Ephesians 2:2, 6:10-11, Matthew 25:41, John 16:11, Revelation 12:12, 20:10)

About Heaven and Hell
We believe in a literal heaven and in a literal hell.  We believe all who turn to God through Christ will spend eternity in heaven.  We also believe that those who do not accept Christ will be eternally lost— suffering the torments of hell forever.  There is no opportunity for anyone to be saved after death.
(Matthew 28:18, John 14:3, Matthew 10:28, 25:41, Revelation 20:10,15)

About Salvation
We believe, that in spite of man’s sin and rebellion against God, God has continued to love man, all men and women, throughout every generation and in every part of the world. Because of this love, God has provided for the salvation of man. We believe such passages as 1 John 2:2, which state that Christ is the propitiation (satisfaction) for the sins of the “whole world,” are to be interpreted from the theological perspective of unlimited atonement. We believe the Bible has been given so we would know the need for, the origin, the nature, the conditions, and the ultimate objectives of that salvation.  Furthermore, we believe the salvation which God has provided for us is by grace, through faith alone in Christ, utterly apart from any human merit or work which man might do. Once a person has trusted Christ for salvation, he can never lose his salvation.
(John 3:16, Ephesians 2:4-7, 2 Peter 3:9, 1 John 3:1-2, 2 Peter 2:1, Ephesians 2:8-9, Titus 3:5, John 10:27-29, 2 Timothy 1:12, 1 Peter 1:3-5)

About the Church
We believe the word church is used two ways in the New Testament:
  1. Of the Body of Christ — made up of all who are saved from the day of Pentecost in Acts 2 until the rapture when the Lord will come “in the air” to take us to Himself.  We believe every believer in this present age has been baptized by the Spirit into the Body of Christ.
  2. Of local churches — the people of God in a particular place who meet together for instruction in the Scriptures, for worship and fellowship, and for service.  World Agape Mission Church is such a local church.
(1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, 1 Corinthians 12:13, Acts 12:5, Galatians 1:2, 1 Thessalonians 1:1)
Two OrdinancesWe believe the Church is to observe two ordinances:
  1. Water baptism. We believe in water baptism, not for salvation, but as a personal testimony of the believer’s union and identification with Christ.  We practice immersion.
  2. The Lord’s Supper.  We believe the bread and the cup symbolically represent the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.  We celebrate the Lord’s Supper (also called Communion) in obedience to Him, in remembrance of Him, and to proclaim His death until He comes.
One is not required to be a member of World Agape Mission Church in order to partake of Communion at our services.  We encourage every believer to consistently partake of Communion and to use it as a time of remembrance of our Lord as well as for self-examination of one’s personal fellowship with God and others, endeavoring to restore fellowship if broken.
(Acts 8:12, 36, 38, 1 Corinthians 1:16, 1 Corinthians 11:23-32)

About the Christian Lifestyle
We believe every believer in Christ should live for the glory of God. This means we must be obedient to the Word of God, and prayer should have a vital part in our lives.  We believe that only through the power of the Holy Spirit can we live godly lives, and for this purpose we need to walk in dependence upon the Holy Spirit and to be filled (or controlled by) the Holy Spirit.
(Romans 12:1-2, 1 Corinthians 10:31, James 1:22, 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Galatians 5:16, Ephesians 5:18-21)

About World Missions
We believe in world missions — that our Lord has commissioned us to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and make disciples of all nations.  We believe, therefore, “the field is the world” and it is imperative we do our part to make Christ known in Los Angeles and throughout the world.
(Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 1:8, Matthew 13:38)

How to become a Christian

1. Admit Your Need
As sinners, we all need a Savior.
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23).
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

There is no way we can become a Christian by good works, religion, or simply being a good person.
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

2.
Accept Jesus’ Provision
We cannot win the battle against sin by our own strength. And because God loved us so much, He sent Jesus as God the Son in human flesh. As man, He was able to die for our sins. As God, He rose again from the dead.
"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8)
“God made him (Jesus) who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." (2 Corinthians 5:21)

When Jesus was crucified on the cross, He took our place so that in Him, we are perfectly forgiven.
“If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus as Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9)

3.  Receive the Lord Jesus Christ
Because He loved us first and gave His life to save us, turn from your sin and yield to Him as Lord of your life.
“Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12)
"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)

By praying a simple prayer of faith and commitment to God you can become a Christian, and enter into His family.
“Dear Jesus, thank You for making me and loving me, even when I have ignored You and gone my own way. I realize I need You in my life, and I’m sorry for my sins. I ask that your death on the cross pay for my sins too. I ask that You forgive me. As much as I know how, I want to follow You from now on. Please come into my life and make me a new person on the inside.”

4.  Assurance of Salvation
Like saying, “I do” in a marriage ceremony, accepting Jesus is just the beginning of a relationship that will grow and mature as you learn more about Him. That growth begins with realizing the fact you now are a child of God having eternal life.
“God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.  He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.” (1 John 5:11-12)

Truth About Baptism

Why Should I Be Baptized?

1.  To follow the example set by Christ.

“At that time Jesus came from Nazareth and was baptized by John in the river” (Mark 1:9).

2.  Because Christ commands it.

“Jesus said, ‘Go then, to all people everywhere and make them my disciples.  Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and then teach them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20).

3.  It demonstrates I really am a believer.

“Christ died for our sins…He was buried…and He rose again” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

“For when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ” (Colossians 2:12).

4.  It illustrates my new life as a Christian

“When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside.  The old self has passed away and a new life has begun” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

“By our baptism, then, we were buried with Him and shared His death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead…so also we may live a new life!” (Romans 6:4).

5.  Baptism does not make you a believer—it shows that you already believe.  Baptism does not “save” you.  Only your faith in Christ does that.  Baptism is like a wedding ring—it is the outward symbol of the commitment you made in your heart.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith…It is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Why Be Baptized By Immersion?

1.  Jesus was baptized that way.

“As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of water” (Matthew 3:16).

2.  Every baptism in the Bible was by immersion.

One example: “…then both Philip and the man went down into the water and Philip baptized him.  When they came up out of the water…” (Acts 8:38-39).

3.  The word “baptize” means “to immerse or dip under water.”

4.  Immersion best symbolizes a Burial and Resurrection!

The founders of several Christian denominations agree:

Martin Luther (Lutherans): “I would have those who are to be baptized to be entirely immersed, as the word imports and the mystery signifies.”

John Calvin (Presbyterians): “The word ‘baptize’ signifies to immerse.  It is certain that immersion was the practice of the ancient church.”

John Wesley (Methodists): “Buried with Him, alludes to baptizing by immersion according to the custom of the first church.”

Who Should Be Baptized?

Every person who has believed in Christ.

“Those who believed and accepted His message were baptized…” (Acts 2:41).

“But when they believed Philip as he preached the Good News…and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women” (Acts 8:12).

What About Children or Babies Being Baptized?

At World Agape Mission Church we wait until our children are old enough to believe and understand the true meaning of baptism before baptizing them.  Some churches practice a “baptism of confirmation” for children.  This ceremony is intended to be a covenant between the parents and God on behalf of the child.  The parents promise to raise their child in the faith until the child is old enough to make his or her own personal confession of Christ.  This custom began about 300 years after the Bible was completed.  This is different from the baptism talked about in the Bible that was only for those old enough to believe.  Baptism’s purpose is to publicly confess your own personal commitment to Christ.  (If parents wish to dedicate themselves publicly to the responsibility of raising their child, we encourage them to bring their child(ren) before the congregation in a “service of dedication,” but no water is involved so the ceremony is not confused with believer’s baptism).

When Should I Be Baptized?

1.  As soon as you have believed!

“Those who believed…were baptized…that day” (Acts 2:41).

“Then Philip began with the Scripture and told him the Good News about Jesus.  As they traveled along the road, they came to some water, and the man said, ‘Look, here is water!  Why shouldn’t I be baptized right now?’ Philip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you may.’  The man answered, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’  So they went down into the water and Philip baptized him” (Acts 8:35-38).

2.  Your whole family can be baptized together, if each family member understands the meaning of baptism and has personally placed their trust in Christ for salvation.

What’s the Next Step?

If you want to be baptized, let one of our pastors know personally or write a note on a prayer request.  A pastor will contact you to schedule your baptism at the next opportunity.  He will also answer questions about what to wear and how you might choose to explain your faith by testimony.
